How we research your surname
Every custom Herald Lab document is prepared by a person — not a random clip-art crest generator. After your order, a specialist:
- Records the surname exactly as you typed it, plus common spelling variants.
- Consults historical and heraldic reference works, onomastic dictionaries, and archival summaries for last-name origin, meaning where attested, and geographic distribution.
- Looks for coats of arms historically recorded for families of this name, or arms commonly associated with the surname in reliable heraldic sources.
- Writes a clear commemorative narrative and typesets a printable PDF (formatted for 8.5×11 / A4).
We favour documented associations over decorative guesswork. When no arms can be documented, we say so and — if the pack includes artwork — supply a clearly labeled decorative reconstruction rather than inventing a fake “official” crest.
What the PDF contains

Why this is not a random clip-art crest
Mass-market “family crest” sites often attach the same generic shield to thousands of unrelated customers. Herald Lab does the opposite: we research the surname you enter, compare sources, and prepare a document that matches what those sources support. Artwork is drawn for clarity and print quality (including full-achievement renderings on Executive packs). Family reorders of the same surname keep a consistent rendering so relatives receive matching files.
Honest heraldry (please read)
A coat of arms is not automatically “yours” because you share a last name. In traditional heraldry, arms belong to specific individuals or lineages, not to every person with the same surname.
When records exist, Herald Lab presents arms historically recorded for some families of this name, or arms commonly associated with the surname in heraldic sources. If none can be documented, we provide a clearly labeled decorative reconstruction. Our documents are commemorative digital heraldic documents — they do not grant legal rights, noble titles, or exclusive ownership of any arms.

What to enter at checkout
